So current world champion Vishy Anand has decided to take the bus to Sofia, flying seemingly out of the question because of European fears of volcanic ash. After his request for a 3-day postponement was rejected out of hand by the Bulgarian organizers, and being the fine sportsman that he is, Anand has decided to travel the 800 miles on land from Frankfurt to Sofia so that the match will begin as scheduled, this Friday.
I don’t think this is too much of a hardship. The president of Portugal, attending the funeral of the Polish president this past weekend, had to travel more than 1000 kms by land (to Barcelona) before he could safely board a flight back to Lisbon. All part of leadership, of setting an example for others and of accepting responsibility for your position in society, I suppose…
