An old Fischer photo
Fischer plays without a suit!
One of the rare instances of Bobby Fischer not playing using a suit. The tournament was Skopje, , which took place during August 1967. In the photo, taken in the first round against Borce Ilievsky, we even see Fischer (then 24 years old) play on one of those ‘weird’ chess sets (take a look at the King and Queen!).
I believe the design is based on a chess set popular in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.
I found the photo of Fischer on page 26 of the January edition of ChessReview, which accompanies an excellently written tournament report by Grandmaster Trifunovich.
Curiously, later in the tournament – probably tired of playing on such a weird chess set – Fischer presented a written protest demanding to use a chess set where the difference between the King and Queen be more evident!
