American Continental: the big FINALE!
One of the America’s most prestigious qualifying tournaments. A total of 75 titled players, including 23 GMs and 15 IMs, will fight it out for 4 qualifying spots for the upcoming World Cup , part of the World Championship cycle. Two Canadian grandmasters are participating: Anton Kovalyov and Eric Hansen
If you have been following our heros’ trials and tribulations this past week then you must be VERY PLEASED with their performances–UNLESS you are one of those bitter, ugly and sad gentlemen who run the CFC–as both Anton and Eric have chances to qualify today, providing neither loses:

Both Eric and Anton have an excellent 7.5 points out of 10. I predict that Mareco and Flores will both draw (both are from Argentina and a draw is good for both). Quesada and Matamoros is too difficult to call, though Quesada is a slight favourite. Kovalyov is White against Cori–so I think that Kovalyov is a clear favourite. And Eric is Black against Granda, a difficult pairing for Eric (Granda is super strong with White). Except that since Eric is half a point ahead of Granda, meaning that he has draw odds. Granda is an exceptional fighter who will–if necessary (and today it seems necessary) take enormous risks to win. I have seen Granda play poker more than once in must win situations in chess!
So the final round will be VERY EXCITING!
