Summer of 1978: Montreal & Korchnoi vs Karpov (Baguio)
Montreal Chess Fever
It was July 1978. While the Karpov vs Korchnoi World Championship match was attracting much of MSM’s interest, the well known Quebec journalist Raymond Sainte-Pierre (CBC/Radio Canada) visited Montreal’s En Passant chess club and the Quebec Open to get an idea of chess’ impact.
I had not seen this report before, but found the link on the ChessTalk site. It brings back plenty of memories! I am in the video at some point (my game with GM Sax). As well, I recognize Jack Gersho, Sam Kleinplatz, Nicola Kafadarow, JP Rheaume and many others.
In those days, chess still had respect. MSM had dozens of weekly chess columns and the moves of the Karpov – Korchnoi match were published everyday, often on the first or second page! The match lasted 32 games and finished only in October (!), but was filled with interesting scandals and twists and turns. Readers interested in learning about what was happening behind the scenes might be interested in following the links below. Enjoy!
